Mario AvilaMario Avila

2012 MBA candidate

Mario realized early on in his Owen career that many of his professional and personal successes could be attributed to the opportunity he received to attend Vanderbilt on a scholarship. While at Owen, Mario immersed himself in the Vanderbilt community, serving as president of the Owen Student Government Association and as an executive board member for the Latin Business Association. He was also named a Cal Turner Fellow for the 2011-12 school year. After graduation, he plans to launch his own company aimed at combating predatory lending practices in the United States.

Tia HarrisTia Harris

2013 MBA candidate

When deciding where to go to pursue an MBA, Tia Harris had several good options. While Vanderbilt was her top pick, the idea of financing a business education seemed out of reach. That is until she received word that she’d been awarded a scholarship to Owen. Tia has taken advantage of a variety of opportunities since arriving on Vanderbilt’s campus last fall. She’s already made her mark through her involvement with the Human and Organizational Performance Association and the Owen Black Student Association, of which she serves as president.

Gretchen HectorGretchen Hector

When Gretchen Hector was awarded a scholarship to Owen in 2010, she never dreamed her Vanderbilt experiences would take her across the world for an internship at Deloitte’s offices in India. Gretchen’s internship not only prepared her for a profession in accounting, but also gave her valuable international business experience that will serve her well when she joins Deloitte’s Salt Lake City, Utah office after graduation this year.

Anderson WilliamsAnderson Williams

2012 Executive MBA candidate

Scholarship recipient Anderson Williams has always had a passion for helping others, and he’s made a profession out of it. A community organizer and social change advocate, Anderson used the skills he gained through Owen’s Executive MBA program to help start the Tennessee College Access and Success Network—a nonprofit organization serving first-generation college students. He currently serves as the organization’s senior director of strategic initiatives, and he plans to continue in that role following his graduation.
