Owen students enjoy Vanderbilt’s rich cultural life. Music, theatre, and dance performances by touring and resident artists are regularly scheduled events on the Vanderbilt campus.
Vanderbilt’s Sarratt Student Center houses an art gallery, a cinema and performance space, art studios, and small lecture rooms. Sarratt Cinema is regarded as one of Nashville’s best film theatres, screening a mixture of new releases, classics, and foreign films—many sponsored by the Nashville Film Society. The student-run gallery exhibits photographs, paintings, and multi-media art, mostly by contemporary artists.
The Blair School of Music sponsors faculty and student recitals and a professional concert series with discounted tickets for University students, faculty, and staff.
The Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery, located in the Old Gymnasium (1880) presents six to eight exhibitions each year. The collection features art from more than 40 countries and cultures in a broad range of media. The art historical collection is the only one of its kind in the immediate region.
In addition to exploring Nashville’s abundant sources of culture and entertainment, Owen students find many on-campus opportunities for sports and fitness. Vanderbilt's fully equipped, 132,000-square-foot Student Recreation Center houses basketball, volleyball, racquetball, squash, and badminton courts; a three-lane suspended track; an indoor swimming pool; a weight room; a climbing wall; an equipment and pro shop; and a table games area. The Office of Campus Recreation also offers classes, clinics, and one-day programs in many activities such as yoga, tae kwon do, and aerobics. The Athletic Department administers indoor and outdoor tennis courts and an outdoor track. Informal free play or a structured routine—it’s your choice.
Few Owen students opt to live in campus housing, because the neighborhoods around Vanderbilt offer a wide range of living choices. Rents for housing vary, depending on furnishings and location, but are reasonable thanks to Nashville’s below-average cost of living.
Campus accommodations for married or single graduate students include all utilities except telephone service and share common laundry facilities. Graduate students do not share dormitories with undergraduates. For more information please visit the Vanderbilt Office of Residential and Judicial Affairs.
